Overrides for registration in mathematics courses

Students in introductory mathematics courses will find that our registration system will automatically check if a student is eligible to enroll for a course before allowing registration. In addition, the system will not allow registration in sections that are full. In rare instances, we find that we must make an exception to our registration rules. These exceptions are granted by entering an override in the registration system. This web page describes the procedures for obtaining overrides for mathematics courses. There are several types of overrides and the procedures for each override are slightly different. A student who is unable to register and uncertain as to the type of override needed should contact Professor Alberto Corso, POT 701, alberto.corso@uky.edu, for more guidance.

Overrides to course capacities

We encourage students to check regularly at myuk.uky.edu to see if spaces open up as students add and drop and as we adjust our schedule. Students may also try to adjust their schedule to register for an open section. Note that most of our courses do not have waitlists. If a student is on a waitlist on that last day to add, then this student will be purged from the course. Thus the use of waitlists resulted in many students not getting into a course they need.

We work very hard to provide every student with the courses they need for their program. We regret that we cannot accommodate requests for a specific time.

If students are unable to find a seat in a course they need, they may request a capacity override by attending one of two Zoom sessions on:

  • August 20, 2021 - 3:00-5:00 p.m.
  • August 27, 2021 - 2:00-4:00 p.m.

To participate, students should request the Zoom link by emailing Mrs. Rejeana Cassady at  rejeana.cassady@uky.edu

Math Placement

Refer to this link regarding Math Placement https://math.as.uky.edu/lower-level-math-placement

Overrides to course prerequisites

Students who do not meet pre-requisites are advised to think carefully before requesting an exception. Taking one course twice is just as expensive and less enjoyable than taking two courses. In cases where a student meets the pre-requisites but we do not have the appropriate information recorded in myuk, we will be happy to provide an override.

All students are encouraged to take a placement test before requesting an override to course prerequisites. Visit Academic Enhancement's web page about the placement exam for more information. Students may request an override for an introductory course by visiting our online form at http://www.math.uky.edu/override-form.

Overrides for registration in controlled enrollment courses.

Students who wish to enroll in a course with controlled enrollment must obtain permission from the person named in the course schedule.

Request to register in certain courses for a third time.

According to University Senate Rule 4.3.3, a Department may refuse a third attempt to register for a course. The Department of Mathematics has chosen to enforce this rule on the third registration in MA 109, 110, 112, 113, 114, and 137. A student who attempts a third registration in one of these courses will find their registration is denied and they will be directed to this web page. To request permission for third registration in MA 109, 110, 112, 113, 114, or 137, a student should submit a request through our override form at https://math.as.uky.edu/lower-level-math-overrides and do one of the following:

  1. Submit evidence that they had previously been granted a withdrawal for urgent non-academic reasons.
  2. Submit evidence that they have a realistic plan to complete the course successfully. Students are expected to attend every class meeting. In addition, a student is expected to work a minimum of two hours per week outside class for each credit hour. Thus a student in a 3 credit hour course should spend a minimum of 6 hours per week studying outside of class. To receive a permit to register, the student must:
    • In the text box on the form, the student must write a statement indicating that they will attend every class. The student must also state how many hours they plan to study, how they will allocate their study time, and list resources that they will use to help improve their performance.
    • In addition, the student's adviser must send an email to serge.ochanine@uky.edu verifying that they have met with the student and discussed the student's study plan. The adviser should also schedule an appointment to meet with the student after their first test to discuss their performance.

For reference, the full text of University Senate Rule 4.3.3 is copied below:

4.3.3 REPEATED REGISTRATION IN A COURSE The Chair of a department may refuse to allow a student to register in a course a third time, including correspondence. A withdrawal from the course shall not be counted as a registration for these purposes if the student can demonstrate that the withdrawal was for urgent non-academic reasons. [US: 3/18/96]
