About UK Mathematics
The University of Kentucky Department of Mathematics plays a central role in the education, research and service missions of the University of Kentucky.
The research faculty has achieved national and international recognition in both pure and applied mathematics. Two of our current faculty members have received the AMS Centennial Fellowship, a highly competitive award given each year to young mathematicians of exceptional accomplishment and promise. Five of members of the Mathematics Department have held University Research Professorships. Faculty research areas range from such areas of pure mathematics as commutative algebra, generalized cohomology theories, potential theory, and harmonic analysis to applied areas such as inverse problems, algebraic combinatorics, coding theory, numerical linear algebra, quantum-mechanical scattering theory, and continuum mechanics.
Our department offers bachelors', masters', and doctoral degrees. We have an active undergraduate program that offers a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences. The Department collaborates with the Department of Economics in the Gatton College of Business to offer the Mathematical Economics major.
Our graduate program enrolls about 60 graduate students and will graduate 12 Ph.D.'s during the 2008 calendar year--our graduates move on to academic tenure-track postions, post-doctoral positions and to government and industry.
Our faculty are involved in emerging distance learning technologies which are in use at mathclass.org. The MathExcel program for Calculus has been in place for many years and has provided a model for new programs in Mathematics and other disciplines statewide.
Through projects such as the Appalachian Mathematics and Science Partnership, ACCLAIM and Algebra Cubed the Department is working with schools throughout the Commonwealth to improve mathematics and science education.
These accomplishments underscore our department's commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
