LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 25, 2013) University of Kentucky Department of Mathematics Professor Carl Lee has won a Mathematical Association of America 2014 Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award. The award will be presented Jan. 16 at the 2014 Joint Mathematics Meetings Prize Session in Baltimore, Md.

The Haimo Award is presented to honor college or university professors who have had influence beyond the school where they instruct and whohave been widely recognized as successful instructors. Each year a maximum of three college or university professors are honored with this award. Upon winning the Haimo Award, the recipients get $1,000 and a certificate of recognition.

“I am deeply grateful for this honor, and very appreciative of my colleagues who felt that I was worthy enough to make the effort to nominate me,” Lee said.

Lee began working in the Department of Mathematics at UK in 1980, where he has been able to explore his interests in discovering, teaching, learning and playing with mathematics. He was an IBM Postdoctoral Research Fellow, an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, a recipient of a Provost’s Outstanding Teaching Award, and is presently a Chellgren Endowed Professor. His area of focus is polyhedral and discrete geometry, but he also engages in mathematics education and outreach projects.
