Title:

No Prof. left behind: A case for intradepartmental coaching

Abstract:

Academic employment normally involves a combination of three variables: service, research and teaching. The distribution of our full time or FTE across these three variables determines how we are being evaluated. It is often more clear how to improve our performance in the dimensions of service and research but it is somehow more mysterious to determine if we are doing a good job at teaching. In this discussion I pretend to address this question and propose a possible solution.

Title: Technology in the Mathematics Classroom

Abstract: Desmos, Geogebra, and Poll Everywhere are three online tools that are free, accessible, and have readily usable templates.  We will take a brief look at some specific ways that I personally have found these tools helpful in encouraging student engagement and promoting active learning.  Come, share your own favorite technological tools, and discuss the pros and cons of attempting to integrate technology into the classroom!

Problem Session: Please bring your current teaching concerns!  We'll try to group solve some issues and help each other find resources.

With TA evaluations on the horizon, this will be our topic of discussion.  As a faculty member, what do you look for?  As a TA, what should you prepare for?  Feel free to bring your questions about the evaluation process!

"A brief introduction to some big ideas in mathematics education through the lens of classroom mathematical discussions."

by: David Dueber, Ph.D. student in STEM Education

Abstract:

A whirlwind tour of some of the major concepts from the last decade of mathematics education research using classroom mathematical discussions as a pedagogical setting. Major themes include Number Talks (Parrish, 2010), Professional Noticing (Jacobs, Lamb, and Philipp, 2010), Developmental Progressions (Clements and Sarama, 2004), Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (Hill and Ball, 2009), and Orchestrating Discussions (Stein, et al., 2008)
