Life in Black and White: The Puzzling World of Crosswords: Crossword puzzles have been an American pastime since 1913. While a lot has changed in our world since then, the crossword remains as popular as ever. We'll take a quick spin through the history of the crossword, highlighting some of the most brilliant people and puzzles. We'll experience how a puzzle gets made from start to finish. We'll explore events and innovations that have shaped the current landscape of the crossword. And perhaps most importantly, we'll see what we can learn from crosswords, even if we aren't puzzle fans.
Bio: Neville Fogarty earned his B.S. in Mathematics and Economics from Washington and Lee University in 2010. After spending a year working in industry, he came to the University of Kentucky, where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematics for his work in algebraic coding theory under the guidance of Dr. Heide Gluesing-Luerssen. Since leaving UK in 2016, Dr. Fogarty has worked in the Department of Mathematics at Christopher Newport University, a public, four-year university with 4,500 students in Newport News, VA. He currently holds the rank of Senior Lecturer. In addition to teaching over a dozen other courses, he has created an upper division course on coding and information theory and an Honors course on crossword puzzles.
