The Hairy Ball Theorem.
Abstract: The hairy ball theorem states that the n-dimensional sphere has a nowhere-vanishing continuous vector field if and only if n is odd. I will describe a nifty proof of the theorem, introducing some important tools from algebraic topology along the way, including homotopy, homology, and degree of self-maps of the sphere. (No background knowledge of topology needed!)
